A stalwart group of advocates has made it their mission to raise awareness about the safety and efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for helping veterans alleviate post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). A mission to bring HBOT to the population of veterans with brain wounds related to their military service in order to fight back against the veteran suicide epidemic, which has claimed more than 140,000 lives since 2001.

Whether fighting Indians or Iranians; whether alone or in alliances; whether defending direct American interests, or the sovereignty of the oppressed, American service members have bled and died, doing their duty.

Back when Trent Lott was the senior Senator from Mississippi, he said during Congressional hearings on treating veteran brain wounds that “It’s funny in a sad way that I can get HBOT for my race horses but not for Veterans.” SEN Lott retired in 2007 and twenty years later his sentiment is still true, but with a twist. Not only are horses still getting healed with HBOT, but Veterans are probably going to get access under VA coverage to powerful psychedelics and dissociative hallucinogens while Congress continues to punt on using a safe, effective, scientifically validated, and widely available and inexpensive treatment. But we expect “more research” from a VA that claims on its web page: “We are the world’s leading research and educational center of excellence on PTSD and traumatic stress.” Notice they don’t say “We excel in clinical care” or “We cure what ails them and give them their lives back.” No, their measure of excellence is research and education. Perhaps in terms of amount of money spent, but in no way sufficient for the needs of the Veteran. Read More

SERVICE MEMBER SUICIDES KEEP RISING

The Military Times released a Report on 2023 suicide statistics released by the Pentagon. It states: “Military researchers recorded 523 suicides in 2023, the highest total since 2020. The number of active-duty troops was 363, up from 331 a year earlier. . . .The Marine Corps had the highest rate of suicide, with about 35 cases per 100,000 people in 2023. The Army was just under 33 cases per 100,000. . . . The Air Force (about 21 per 100,000) and Navy (about 19 per 100,000) saw lower rates. But all four services have seen a steady increase since 2011, when the Department began formally tracking the issue. ”

According to Air & Space Forces Magazine, “the Active-duty component saw a 12 percent increase from 331 deaths by suicide in 2022 to 363 in 2023.”

The Grey Team draws a stark comparison: “As suicide rates among returning US military veterans continue to rise, the statistics now show that it is now six times more dangerous for an American soldier to return home from war than it is for him/her to actively be engaged in combat with the enemies of our country.”

Safety and efficacy were demonstrated in 21 clinical trials. Ten states have enacted legislation, appropriating $32.3 million for HBOT treatments. HBOT is observed to eliminate Suicide Ideation! Veterans diagnosed with TBI / PTSD who receive HBOT begin normal sleep patterns, experience reduced nightmares, improved “in the moment” life with family, and gain the ability to return to normal life and sometimes employment.

The Obvious Question: Since HBOT Works to Heal TBI/PTSD, Why Isn’t the Veterans Administration Using It?

If rangers in the National Park Service were experiencing among their wildlife populations the equivalent of what DoD and the VA call “the suicide epidemic”, they would not ignore immediately available solutions. They would move heaven and earth to understand the crisis, and find antidotes or vaccines, or any treatments that would save the wildlife. Yet the culture in the VA – their “arrogance of ignorance” – prevents Veterans and their caregivers from knowing about or receiving immediate help available with HBOT and other alternative therapies.
