Suicide is like that: in an instant, it’s too late. Daily we’re at the 11th hour for too many veterans. But the sense of urgency on the part of the US Government is woeful. Even Congress has passed laws demanding ACTION to end the suicide epidemic, but one waits in vain for ACTION. Lest we forget: the suicide and opioid overdose rates among service members are at Epidemic proportions.

While current numbers are not available from the VA, a similar increase would be 22 veteran suicides a day, or an annual total of over 8,000 tragedies. Irrespective of when the count begins, more veterans are committing suicide each year than died in Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts since 9/11.

US and allied service members are set to be out of Afghanistan by early to mid-July, well ahead of President Biden’s Sept. 11 deadline. Over 8,000 American service members are estimated to have died in Iraq and Afghanistan, with hundreds of thousands wounded in visible and invisible ways.
